THE GREAT WALK OF AFRICA, March 2008 is a unique fund-raising event for the benefit of children orphaned by AIDS in East Africa. Global Alliance for Africa, www.globalallianceafrica.org, a not for profit organization headquartered in Chicago with offices in Tanzania and Liberia has selected Tropical Ice, www.Tropical-Ice.com, Africa’s Leading Adventure Safari Company to escort eight GAA participants on Africa’s wildest and longest foot safari, THE GREAT WALK OF AFRICA.
Following game trails we will make a 12 day, 110 mile crossing of the immense wilderness of Tsavo in a true explorer’s style safari. Our route will take you along the courses of both the Tsavo and Galana Rivers, with vehicles moving camp and personal belongings every day. We will experience Africa’s unique wildlife and birdlife. Tsavo is big game country: elephant, Cape buffalo, hippo, lion and leopard. Our days on Tsavo’s rivers will be gloriously full; walking the mornings, resting away the afternoons, and game driving the last hours of daylight in our specially designed 4x4 safari vehicles.
All of our camps will be set on the beautiful banks of these two spectacular rivers. Tropical Ice has carefully maintained the atmosphere of the hunting safaris of old for this photographic odyssey in a way that will remove all traces of the modern world. The camps are stylish, the food is gourmet and the staff has 25 years experience.
Iain Allan has spent most of his life in Tsavo, and he will personally guide our Great Walk. In 1997 Iain walked from the summit of Kilimanjaro to the Indian Ocean with a small group of friends, and the safari was well described in Rick Ridgeway's book The Shadow of Kilimanjaro. The most interesting and exciting part of this trip was the 12 day Tsavo section, and our Great Walk will span this area.
Certain to be a life altering experience, the trip is designed to acquaint the group with the GAA integrated approach for providing assistance to 5000 of the most vulnerable children affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa. During your journey you will:
- Visit GAA programs in Nairobi Kenya, savor warm welcomes from the African
people who remain hopeful while struggling with heart wrenching poverty
- Spend 12 days walking the immense wilderness of Tsavo in the authentic safari
style, as portrayed in Out of Africa by Streep and Redford
- Relax on the Coast of Kenya at Hemingways or immerse yourself within the 500 year old Swahili culture on the island Lamu at Peponi Hotel (price not included)
- TOTAL COST: $8500 includes air, transfers, visa, insurance, lodging, meals
The primary objective for The Great Walk is to raise funds to benefit the children. In addition to paying for the trip, volunteers will walk to earn donations from sponsors. It is important that each volunteer appreciate the financial responsibility he or she carries.
- One participant: $5000, 2 family members: $9000, 3 family members: $12000
