Nurses for Africa is a program of Global Alliance for Africa and draws nursing scholarship candidates from young people orphaned or made vulnerable by AIDS, and supports them through advanced education in careers in nursing. Scholarship students commit to two years of nursing service after graduation as a payback for the scholarship.
Nurses for Africa offers three types of scholarships
1. Nursing Student Scholarship
Qualified applicants complete four years of education to become diploma prepared nurses.
2. Returning Nurses Scholarship
Nurses who have a two-year certificate and are currently working in high-need areas in the community return for two years of education to complete their nursing diploma.
3. Teaching Nurse Scholarship
Diploma prepared nurses who wish to become instructors in nursing programs complete one year of additional education to become nursing instructors.
Nurses for Africa Strengthens Nursing Programs
Ten percent of the scholarship for each student is used as program support for NFA school partners. This fund provides up-to-date textbooks, dormitories, teaching materials, and computers.
Nurses for Africa Guarantees Employment
Graduates of the NFA program commit two years of nursing service to areas where they are needed most. NFA partially subsidizes the salaries of program graduates during the service period. NFA provides job opportunities in the medical, corporate, community, and not-for-profit sectors after graduation.
