  Art Therapy Program
Since July of 2006 GAA has worked to create an art program for orphans and vulnerable children affected by HIV/AIDS in East Africa. Three summer weekend art camps were conducted in 2006 and 2007 which combined the talents of African artists with their American counterparts to provide workshops in indigenous art practices and basic art principals. 165 children attended the first year and the program was expanded the second year to serve 750 children (in two locations). Through this process, local artists and children from the community were identified and various activities were introduced and assessed. Dick Blick Art Materials and Speedball contributed nearly $5,000 worth of art supplies to the camp and program.

GAA is presently establishing a full-time art and music therapy program for these children affected by HIV/AIDS in Kenya and Tanzania. The program will be based at GAA’s Tumaini Vocational Training Center in Arusha, Tanzania, but the activities will be offered throughout Kenya and Tanzania at schools and community centers in the areas where GAA partners are working.

The goal of the program is that by December of 2007, the program will expand into weekly sessions at Tumaini, meeting on Saturdays. By June of 2008, construction of a building to house the art program and other classrooms will be completed.

The objectives of the art program are to train children of all ages in art techniques and specific indigenous crafts, provide a form of recreation, an outlet for expression, and most importantly, a healthy psycho-social context to remember the individuals they have lost and, consequently, help them move into the future. In a world where half of new HIV infections occur among 15-24 year olds, art therapy can be life-saving and prevent as well as mitigate the impact of HIV/AIDS.
